High Definition vs Standard Definition

New digital video technology has two different image quality standards – SD and HD. SD stands for Standard Definition and HD stands for High Definition.

Though we can come up with good arguments for both – Standard Definition Video and High Definition Video, HD takes an edge in the end. SD refers to a resolution of 720 x 576 or 720 x 480 and is related to image resolution of old TVs and DVDs. Many editing software applications support old SD formats as they have been around for sometime now. Since the resolution is less, the size of the file is also smaller. So, it utilizes less hard disk space. It is more cost saving option than its HD counterpart.

On the other hand, HD refers to image resolution of new technologies like Blu-Ray and HDTV. The three major formats of HD are 720p, 1080p and 1080i. 720p means 1024×720 using progressive scanning system where each line is drawn in sequence. 1080i has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 with interlaced scanning system where odd and even lines are drawn in sequence upon screen refresh. 1080p has a same resolution as 1080i, but it is with progressive scanning system. HD editing software applications need more processing power and space than their SD counterparts.
The sparkling quality of HD video looks amazing on the internet. HD viewing at fast internet speed is call of the hour. Your home or conference room big screen displaying an HD video ensures that you get a lifelike experience. Many network and cable outlets require HD formats.

These days HD has become a quality standard which is slowly becoming more and more affordable and supported. HD is the new in thing. To ascertain the true quality of a video recorded by a camera, the resolution of the camera must be checked. Most common form of watching an online HD video is the mobile phone. To check whether your phone supports HD video or not, check the resolution of the screen. Any screen that meets the display resolution requirement can play HD video on it. Both the technologies serve the same purpose. The difference lies in your requirement. If the requirement is high quality, beautiful video and amazing audio, go for HD and if your requirement is cost effective solution with less space requirement, go for SD.
